Master plants are the plants that  bring us closer to the spirit world. They provide knowledge, strength and ability to heal to those that ingest them. Furthermore, they possess healing properties that are used to treat a wide variety of illnesses.

The practice of vegetalismo, the use of plants to treat illness, is as old as mankind. Amazonian indigenous peoples have long ago recognized that the healing properties of plants do not only heal physical problems, but also emotional, mental and spiritual problems.

Amazonian indigenous peoples regard master plants as having their own identity, personality and abilities. In short, they are not just green matter with chemical healing properties, but are alive, aware and wise beyond comprehension.

The legend about the discovery of Ayahuasca goes that the plants themselves told the people to combine the two plants to create the visionary brew that is now used throughout the amazon basin to connect with other plants, to learn from them and to heal.

A common misconception about the practice of Ayahuasca is that Ayahuasca is the most important plant. A patient participates in a ceremony, drinks la medicina with the maestros, does the work and hopefully gets healed. The reality is that Ayahuasca is a master plant, that works together with other master plants to do the healing work.

Depending on the affliction, a participant does not need to diet these other plants to heal (although it certainly helps), because the maestro has dieted these plants so he can use their healing powers in a ceremony. This makes the role of the maestro an invaluable one in the practice of Ayahuasca.

In short, master plants play an often overlooked, but essential role in Amazonian curanderismo.

Learn more about each plant

Like the jungle, this website is growing organically. We will be adding information about the plants as we grow. Keep in mind that it is difficult to communicate as to exactly how a plant teaches or is of benefit. The plants communicate and teach on the intuitive level and the work is very personal. The information described here is based on interviews with maestro Julio and personal experience.
